Snippets

* Today is the 65th anniversary of the Hiroshima attack. 200,000 people were killed in the attack. We still have a proliferation of nuclear weapons globally, despite global efforts to negotiate a solution. Hopefully something more concrete will come of nuclear disarmament talks at the UN in September.

* Pygmy hippo baby Kambiri (Nigerian for "allow me to join this family") made her first public appearance at Sydney's Taronga Zoo today. After an hour's outing, she was exhausted and went back to bed. When Kambiri is older she will join the Australasian Breeding Program, which helps provide a safety net against extinction for pygmy hippos. Pygmy hippos are a solitary forest-dwelling creature native to west Africa and little is known about them in the wild with the majority of research recorded about the species learnt from those cared for in zoos. The World Conservation Union estimates that there are fewer than 3,000 pygmy hippos remaining in the wild.

Adorable!

* Emma Watson has chopped her locks - saying goodbye to Hermione and hello to comparisons to Mia Farrow. What do you think of her new look? She has the bone structure to pull it off!

A big well-spotted to Ali - film buff extraordinaire - who pointed that out!

* In other UN-type and Mia Farrow news, Naomi Campbell reluctantly appeared for the prosecution in the trial of Charles Taylor (former President of Liberia accused for crimes againsty humanity and war crimes). He allegedly gave the supermodel blood diamonds, however in her testimony, Naomi stated she wasn't sure who they came from (delivered as they were by bodyguards following a charity dinner at which she, Mia Farrow and Nelson Mandela attended). Her attendance at the trial sparked a media frenzy that was "off the scale" according to one on-looker. Although Campbell's evidence didn't quite establish the direct evidentiary link the prosecution was looking for, it has reignited international interest in blood diamonds.
