Happy Friday #GIRLBOSS

BOOM!

Sophia Amoruso has taken the women's business-book world by storm with her book #GIRLBOSS (it helps that the title is terribly Instagramable and Facebookable too...).

"I stopped feeling like I didn't belong anywhere, and realized that I actually belonged anywhere I wanted to be."

—Sophia Amoruso

Emerging from being a high school dropout, flaky shoplifter, unbalanced home life runaway and with multiple diagnoses for her short attention span (depression, ADD, the usual grocery list for teens who don't feel satisfied or who appear to be "lost") - Sophia Amoruso found something that grabbed her attention: vintage shopping and eBay ... (and hashtags, obviously)

From the illustrious confines of her now ex-boyfriend's apartment, Sophia Amoruso started an eBay store selling a highly curated selection of vintage pieces - which were also meticulously styled and, when sold, packaged and delivered to her quickly growing band of eBay customers. In just five years, the shop became an international style source that outgrew both eBay and multiple, ever-expanded warehouse facilities. #GIRLBOSS tells the story of how Sophia had her moment of clarity - during a moment of sloppy shoplifting and the possibility of a criminal record taking prime position on her CV - and her subsequent propulsion to starting her own international online store (www.nastygal.com) with loads of staff, a cult following, and of course lots of shiny gold coins in her bank account.

I am 3/4 through the book, and loving the frankness of her story, and the energy that so obviously oozes out of people with entrepreneurial flair. Although it doesn't offer up as many gems of wisdom as, say, Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office, I think it's a pretty great story about how you can turn around your position in life, if only you try. She is clearly one brave mo-fo, doing most things by the age of 19 that most of us will never do in our lives. I also like the unconventional nature of her life - I think lots of people in the modern world feel constrained by how we're "supposed" to do things and Amoruso's path has been anything but conventional. I do like that she says she wishes she'd gone to university, but the reality for many is that they don't get that chance. It's great to see a story of someone spinning relative adversity into an ability to see clearly where life may take her, to change that course and to identify a talent that became a genuine passion (and happily a great money spinner).

I also really like her attitude to money - she's proudly frugal, doesn't pay for anything she can't literally pay for in that moment, and notes that she was too busy building her empire to be out on crazy spending sprees anyway.

If you're looking for a fun way to wile away a rainy afternoon, this book may just be it. Also, check out the #GIRLBOSS blog for some more great #girlboss stories.

Happy reading!

Viva Brisvegas: Box Pretty

Lovers of vintage shopping and (mainly) dwellers of Brisbane would know that Box Vintage is one of the best spots for scoring your next quality vintage find in Brisvegas. Located in West End, just metres from my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Brisbane, Box Vintage is a shining beacon for vintage-clothes fiends.

Always in tune with the seasons and reasonably priced BV truly has something for everyone - the tragic 80s costume party, the 70s-channelling fashionista and everyone in between. This weekend, BV celebrates its 5th birthday - so young, yet so well-established! It has piles of clothes 50% off, so get your goodselves in if you can.

More Ways to Spend Your Savings

After yesterday's efforts, I should be exhausted and my credit card should be well and truly in the freezer. Not quite.

Random internet clicking led me to this adorable Etsy store - Pretty Little World. Plenty of gorgeous vintage finds which I am lusting over. Alas! I am banned from shopping. If I wasn't banned from shopping, I would probably want to buy most of these:

I may also attempt to emulate one Betty Draper in this Saks 5th Avenue dress...

OMFG

And that does not stand for "Oscars Marred by Frog Gathering". No. It stands for what we in text-land know it stands for. I am once again unable to upload pictures.

So I will have to write my Oscars round-up, and post pictures later.

Key trends I saw on the red carpet this year were:
* Lovely, vintage-y diamondy earrings - not too OTT, but oozing class, sophistication and best of all, money.

* Speaking of oozing money and vintage-y diamondy bits of jewellery, this trend was particularly omnipotent on the neck and around the wrist - lots of gorgeous, envy-causing necklaces. A beautiful trend - very classy, and unlike the ankle strap on the shoe, the choker somehow elongates rather than truncates. Marvellous.

* Chandelier earrings - they're back! How long have they been on the backburner? I'm sure long before the GFC hit. Nevertheless, there were some stunning chandeliers on display, but top set goes to Best Supporting Actress Nominee Carey Mulligan.

* In terms of colour, there wasn't a lot of it. Stars seemed to stick to their vintage-y glamour (see jewels above), with block colours galore and plenty of always-reliable black or champagne being trotted out.

* Most excitingly there were lots of purples: deep burgundy through to lavender to lilac. Very pretty and feminine - like a field of pretty little flowers on the red carpet.

* Strapless or backless. These two words could basically sum up the style of the dresses floating along. There were a few one-shoulders (love your work, Tina Fey) but it was quite old-school in this department also. Can't go too far wrong with strapless when you're a star who has time and cashola at your disposal for some decent - and regular - personal training sessions... I adored Maggie Gyllenhall's printed strapless dress. She is a consistent beauty who pushes the envelope just enough to stand out, and restrains it all just enough to stay classy. And backless - Diane Kruger and SJP being the notable winners with this style.

* Hair was styled in very chic up-dos, with the monster buns stealing the show.

* My favourite was a tie between Maggie and SJP. Gorgeous.

What have we learnt? Old school glamour is in with a vengeance - we are talking restrained glamour. None of this glamazon, in-your-face-flesh or OTT dripping-in-bling type guff. Think the 1940s to the end of the 1950s. I think there was a lot of Betty Draper on a night out in Manhattan on the red carpet today - lovely diamond jewels at the ears and neck, with some glitz on the wrist also. Nothing huge and obnoxious though! And the female form is most certainly being celebrated - (covered) breasts, curves and beautiful hair are all in. Less emphasis on the red lips and black nails, more emphasis on the whole, sexy, 1950s, womanly package. I loved this year's Oscars. And I am crying on the inside that I cannot post pictures for y'all... Even though I know you've all already seen it by now.

PS: Clearly, I have updated with pictures now. But I was crying on the inside all of yesterday afternoon. Now I am happy.

On the 7th Day of Christmas

On the 7th day of Christmas my true love sent to me ... a Chanel handbag. Now that is true love!

(VB's Chanel is a vintage... And she looks like she might be in Central Park. Lucky lady).

Dreaming...

Been a while since I have posted - apologies for the absence...

I had a weird but inspiring dream last night which I think may have arisen due to me feeling a bit blah about my work/career, being sick with the flu, missing my loved ones and just coming back from a lovely visit back home...

I dreamt that we were all meeting for lunch in my shop that was surrounded by beautiful clothes and homewares and books which had this gorgeous huge kitchen in the middle of it and full of vintage furniture.. hmm a sign of the future?

Some girls who are building on their own dreams and creating a niche little business are the girls from the Jewels of New York. A beautiful website filled with yummy seasonal recipes and cute holiday cookies. Here are some pics of their food stylings..

Aaahh, to be creative and talented.. *Sigh*

Stupid left brain (or is it right?)

E is for Etsy!

I recently discovered Etsy and could not believe I had not heard about it earlier!!

Etsy is like Ebay but for vintage and handmade things only - there is some great stuff on there plus fixed prices means no waiting around and bidding!! Think of it as an online version of all your favourite markets and stores put together - it is great!!

Etsy has some great features for searching for your next "must buy" item including
  • Shop local - searches and lists sellers in your city;

  • Showcase - where sellers feature their top items - this changes daily;
  • Pounce - which lists sellers who have not yet had a sale or shows the most recent purchases made on Etsy

Some of my recent finds:

Old clothes...

Having been inspired by a friend's impressive shopping efforts over the weekend in Tokyo and listening to her tales of the tree lined streets and canals of Nakameguro filled with vintage stores and eclectic boutiques, I have been inspired to do some investigation of my own about vintage shopping in Hong Kong.

I walked the streets of Soho on Saturday and found my way into a couple of vintage stores...But this wasn't like walking into Endo's or St Vinnies in Brisbane, these stores had designer vintage - Pucci, Diana Von Furstenberg, Miu Miu and the list goes on... But why were there only a few vintage stores in an area known for its restaurants and fashionable boutiques? It seems there are heaps of antique furniture places in Hong Kong but not antique clothing..

Maybe it has something to do with high rents and demand for space in Hong Kong and the lower returns on vintage clothing or is it just that Hong Kong fashionistas don't like wearing old clothes?
