Black Out Curtains

With the relentless march towards sleeplessness coming closer to its final destination, I have decided I probably need some kick-arse Anna Wintour style sunglasses to hide the bags under my eyes from the friendly people in my neighbourhood.

Living in a city like Brisbane makes it hard to go anywhere without bumping into people you know. This is a lovely thing, but some days (i.e. the days when you haven't brushed teeth or hair) it's the last thing you want. I also find that the day you're in your least flattering jeans and haven't a scrap of make-up on your face (oh the humiliation of not being in either adorable boots or fabulous heels and sans mascara to add to the horror!) is the day you are guaranteed to see an ex-boyfriend or a frenemy and all you want is to look a bit glamorous and just a touch more put together than that familiar person in your line of sight. Never happens though, ammiright?

I recently came across Thierry Lasry sunglasses while floating around Sydney: described as sunglasses based on the concept of futuristic vintage with an updated, modern and avant garde touch, I think these are pretty much exactly what's needed to evade the Fashion Police over the next few months.

While there's not a whole lot new that can be done with sunglasses, it's nice to have a newer player in the game apart from the usual Gucci, Prada, Tom Ford, D&G. At this stage, I've only seen Thierry Lasry stocked in Brisbane at Scanlan Theodore and boutique opticians.

Happy Friday: Study

Oh the agony! Why am I doing assignments again?? Just how many qualifications do I wish to collect anyway??

This weekend I must write an assignment, going back on a promise I made myself several years ago after completing a Masters of Law while also working full time. Clearly, I have a self-harm problem, in the form of study. I swear it stops after this assignment and exam are neatly filed away in the "Career Enhancing Move" pile. I have even gone so far as to delete my annual reminder saying "Consider MBA". Consider it considered: I'm not doing it.

Re-Spec

Cab drivers in my new part-time home have taken sadistic pleasure in telling me that the city of Adelaide is renowned for its dark winters. Sunrise is at 6:30 in summer alone, so I can barely fathom what time the sun bothers making an appearance in winter. Worse, and goaded by my squeals of horror from the back seat, the drivers malevolently inform me that the sun is gone by 4:30pm. 4:30pm! This all seems positively Northern Hemisphere and impossibly bleak to me. Not only will I lose the daily joy of basking in the pleasant tingle of sun on my skin, I will also suffer the loss of legitimately hiding behind sunglasses for huge chunks of the day, unless I want to become a wannabe Anna Wintour. Frankly, she is inimitable, so I'll have to leave that fantasy aside.

But I love sunglasses!

Looking on the bright side (badoom ching!), this darkness and lack of sunglass-wearing weather opens another avenue for me to shop - for glasses! (oh and for adorable jackets and gorgeous leather boots, but we'll save that for another day).

I have been a glasses-wearer since that fateful day in grade 3 when I had my eyes tested and discovered to my horror that I was so dreadfully blind that I needed triple-coated Coke bottle lensed glasses. Naturally, I didn't wear them, preferring to squint and read off other kids' work than to suffer the indignity of Steve Urkel glasses. It wasn't until I began playing tennis that I had to give up the pretence. If I wanted to win a game, I really needed to be able to see the ball before it was literally in my face. By then, the optical gods had smiled upon me, and contact lenses were readily available, meaning no one had to know my dirty secret.

Advances in glasses technology also meant that I could hide the truth of my crappy eyesight behind streamlined lenses shaved to tenths of their original widths. But still, I rarely wear glasses. I blame this in part on childhood trauma, a small part on vanity, and a large part on the sunny climate of Brisbane. Should I wear glasses every day, I then need prescription sunglasses. This just seems a further descent into ageing and general bodily decrepitude for me, so I simply refuse. Also, it is impossible to fit a set of glasses (for when you step indoors) in adorable clutch bags when flitting out for weekend excursions.

Figure that one out, optical gods!

Now that I am well-informed by the cab driving public of Adelaide that there is no need for sunglasses for a solid 5 months of the year, I now have a chance  to incorporate glasses into my daily wardrobe. Naturally, I need new glasses.

My current frames are of the solid black, square-shaped Roy Orbison variety of specs. My husband likes them far more than I do. I actually find them a little clunky, but he has good taste (biased wife) so I am prepared to just accept his input.

I've decided the winds of change have blown through the glasses world, however. As I hunt down the perfect frames, I feel that bone or ivory are the latest colour for specs. That, and purple or light candy-tones of pink.

Also of interest is what I call the upside down Top Deck (losing interest now, thinking about chocolate...). Dark on top, light or bare on the bottom.

Then again, what am I thinking? Who relies on cab drivers for their information? Maybe I'll get a second opinion...

Happy Friday

Another ridiculously busy weekend... So tonight I chill (after I pop in to the Alannah Hill sale!). I'm hoping to see either The Descendants, The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo or Hugh at some point this weekend (probably tonight - an alone in the cinema thing that I LOVE doing).

And I'm hoping to pick up my new glasses tomorrow!

Happy Friday!

Worship At The Altar

I love this interview with Iris Apfel. I've mentioned her before and she is just such a bird. What an amazing woman. I think she's one of those women for whom the phrase "only in New York" was created.

The little pause after she mentions her mother is lovely. Precious. I also love her enooooormous glasses! Current obsession!

Current Obsession: Oversized Eyewear

I am also drawn to the 1950s cats-eye glasses of olde... But doubt I'd have the guts to do it myself. Prada has a fabulous pair, not so different from these (available here on Etsy).

But should I do it? The oversized glasses aren't been worn by many... And I think it takes a lot of guts to have your peepers framed in such a way. But I do so adore geek chic. And what do I care if no one else is doing it anyway? Since when??

The only irksome thing is, is that because not a lot of peeps are doing the oversized glasses thing:
(a) There isn't a lot of stock here... So I'm either going full-on costly (and there is of course a divine pair of either Viktor & Rolf or Christian Dior's that I have my eyes on - literally - and which each cost a very pretty penny that could possibly go elsewhere... Like my credit card debt!) or I'm going el cheapo, and they're not as pretty... Do we wait for more stock? But then be one of the sheep?; and

(b) The frames are more on the chunky side, which doesn't quite work on my face. Apparently it's because this trend is mainly for men ... pfft!

Dilemmas. Again.

This Visual Life

I love how shady he looks at certain moments in this... His line of work seems so solitary.

I'm just going to digress for a moment and brag that I've been photographed by street photogs twice in my life: once at a music festival, by some chick for a London fashion blog (no idea what it was called - annoyingly!); and another time in New York. Sadly, it wasn't Scott Schumann.

You didn't want to know that, did you? Let me just take my ego outside.

Happy Friday: It's July!

July. Doing one's taxes, writing lists, preparing for a new season's fashion as it rapidly approaches, going to Splendour, tripping to Singapore to see marvellous Phuong, watching Paul Kelly under the stars, birthday parties galore and getting with the new. It's a good vibe for July... Can't you just feel it??

Ana Montiel - do check out her site...

Living in the present, but dreaming of the future. More dates (qualitatively) but less (quantitatively). De-cluttering... Finding somewhere new to spread my wings (and clothes). Investigating future travel. Yay. Happy, happy Friday.

It's still winter, and I'm still wearing jackets and scarves, but the end is in sight... I'm sure of it.

(Oh yeah.. and there's a pesky 10 km run tomorrow to think about... But it will be followed by a lovely breakfast in the sun, and then an appearance at a gallery exhibition opening. Hooray!).

Current vibes: (a) daydreamer

(b) fabulous

(c) player

(d) unapologetic smarty pants

What are you vibing for July?

Sunglass Hut

I have no idea why, but I struggle to find sunglasses to suit my face (or budget - since when did sunglasses become worthy of a $600 price tag?). The cheapies from the service station are about the only ones that fit. I should send a service station prototype shape to Dolce & Gabbana as an FYI.
