Shoesday (Was Yesterday)

Tuesday is rapidly becoming the day in my week that GOES MISSING. Where did Tuesday go? Was it actually Tuesday, or did I think it was Wednesday or - worse - still Monday?! Where was I??

So many questions!

A pair of shoes will calm me. Check out these puppies.

Thank you, Kelly Rowland.

Guest Editor: The Law of the Ugly Chair

Possibilities & The Divine Law of The Ugly Chair

In a past life, I did a bit of interior design work to pay the bills. This was a common scene: The homeowners and I do a walk through of their house. In the living room is a garish chair. Fugly. Usually a lounger, often with some kind of floral pattern. The couple has brought me in because they want fresh, contemporary, comfort. “What’s with the chair?” I ask. “We know it’s horrible, we hate it. But we haven’t had the money to get a new one.” Me: “Get rid of it this weekend.” Them: “But what will we sit on?” Me: “Sit on the floor. Pile up on the couch. You’ll figure it out. The sooner you get rid of it, the sooner the right chair will show up.”

They resist.

Them: “But they’ll be a…big…hole in the room.” Me: “Yep! It’s called space! Every time you walk by that space, you’ll be thinking about how great a new chair is going to feel.”

They resist.

Them: “But shouldn’t we order the ideal chair first, before we get rid of the old one? Have the new one delivered, then have the old one taken away?” Me: “Actually, it’s better of you don’t. Let the space be there. It’ll change the way you look at the whole room. And besides, maybe a chair isn’t what’s best. You won’t know until you let go…of the chair.”

The light dawns. One half of the couple pipes up, “You know, I really can’t wait to get rid of that fucking chair.” Nodding. Grins. “I’ll call the Goodwill pick up guys.” Action! It’s a beautiful sight when right that very instant, the couple each takes an arm of the chair and they heave it into the garage for it’s re-using destiny.

Letting go makes way for something closer to your truth…which is always more beautiful. Always.

Making space signals the universe that you’re ready for ideal…or at the very least, much improved.

Making space expands your being and clarifies (and dare I say, actually minimizes) your needs.

The Divine Law of the Ugly Chair applies as much to furniture and stuff, as it does to lovers, jobs, and thought forms.

Because: Going without, and holding out, is better than selling out. Always.

Humor me with the chair metaphor a bit longer. You’ve got the nasty chair (or…jacket, boss, incessant critical thought, ceramic mug,) in your space. Every time you come across it in your physical or psychic area, you consciously or subtly think, “Meh, that damn… chair…jacket…boss, thought, mug.” And you affirm to yourself that you put up with fugly, or nasty, or uncomfortable. You make “making do” your normal. You’re giving sacred space to something that isn’t sacred to you.

Things you don’t use. People who use you. Possessions-roles-gigs that make you feel pinched, or awkward, cheated, compromised, heavy, confused…stuffed — they need to go. You know this. But it’s not just because dumping the chump and reducing your carbon foot print is right action, and life-affirming, and socially responsible. It’s because possibility requires space to unfold.

Clear space.

Expand possibility.

Everywhere.

Hipster Heroes

Forecast: Retail Madness

Think back a moment to the year 2007. That year brought us many things: David Beckham transferred to the LA Galaxy soccer team, Britney Spears shaved her head, Anna Nicole Smith OD'd, Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU, K.Rudd became PM and ... Stella McCartney's range for Target caused retail mayhem across suburban shopping centres everywhere in Australia.

What a difference 3 years makes: K.Rudd is gone, Britney's hair has grown back, David Beckham is mired in prostitute scandals, the EU is struggling under financial strains and ... Stella McCartney is returning with another Target range.

The range was launched at a garden party in Sydney on the weekend. I wish I had been there, as it all looked terribly civilised and lovely.

Happy Friday: The Long Week Is Over

I will be nourishing my soul - visits with friends, decent sleep, nourishing food, not too much alcohol, and probably a pedicure (sorry little sister... I need to do it regardless if you're with me - my winter toes aint pretty!).

I would also like to tell you all that I thought I knew what love was until Wednesday night when I spent an hour rocking my niece to sleep while we watched the Britney Spears episode of Glee. She is the most perfect looking baby I have ever seen (they ordinarily do not excite me) and I thought my heart would burst with the love that was in my chest! I cannot even imagine how it must feel to be a new mama, but being an aunt is amazing! (Please note: I am not clucky - I am most happy to return the little darling to her mum, but being an aunt is very cool).

Australia's Next Top Muddle: The Magazine Fallout

After the botched finale to Australia's Next Top Model, runner-up (and momentary winner) Kelsey was awarded not only with a consolation prize of $25,000 + an all expenses paid trip to NYC, she also still scored herself a Harpers Bazaar cover - usually reserved only for the winner. Harpers is releasing 2 covers for November: one featuring the actual winner, Amanda (in that dress); and the other featuring Kelsey. Here are the covers:

Personally, I prefer Kelsey's cover.

And so, it would seem, does Harpers editor Edwina McCann (whom I have adored from afar since her time as style editor for The Weekend Australian Magazine). This is what she had to say of the debacle:

"It is a monumental screw up... We had a cover ready to go to print last night, we've had to swap our printing presses so another magazine prints before us, complicated issues; we were abused all night... I think essentially what happened is the network [Foxtel] did want Amanda to win; they were keen for Amanda to win. They kept the voting lines open for a long time, I think, in the hope that she would get over the line. I'm told it came down to three votes... And they're audited. So they called it for Kelsey....

We had a cover girl. I would have left it as it was... We've decided we're going to split the cover because immediately we were pretty much abused online for perhaps not printing the Kelsey cover... From a sales perspective, as a fashion person, Amanda is taller and she can do runway but Kelsey is the better cover girl... I've got to explain it to production people, to the printers, to my managing editor and to my readers... what am I going to do with the inside of the magazine? It's meant to be an eight-page story. I can't print that twice!"

I think Harpers Bazaar - and Kelsey - are the real winners in this scenario: Harpers scores from the hype (and who will win the covergirl contest, I wonder?); and Kelsey's name is everywhere as the girl who won then lost. I, for one, will be buying the magazine - with Kelsey on the cover.

Friday Funny: Carrie Meets Carrie

SJP meets ADR - wearing something that I'm sure we could all imagine Carrie in if Patricia Field had her way - at a Fashion Week event in Milan (I think). What do you think she's thinking? A narrow sartorial escape?

Here's the full ADR outfit for your info:

And check out ADR's slightly mad website replete with spelling errors and what can only be described as a 'stream of consciousness' writing style...
