One Flew East, One Flew West

Ever since Pocahontas' turkey-plume headpiece caught the eye of Captain John Smith way back in the early 1600s, feathers have had several shining moments in the ever-rotating covetable fashion piece of the moment arena. In the 1920s, flappers festooned themselves with feather boas, Marie Antoinette pinned a few in her super-high updo in the late 1700s, and who could forget Bjork's infamous swan outfit in 2001? Or indeed practically any hat Camilla Parker-Bowles dons...

Feathers featured in the Autumn/Winter 08/09 shows, and are appearing with a vengeance on clothes, eyelashes and accessories currently (of course appearing at the same time as fringing - the ultimate bohemian combo, and a big nod to cowboys and indians games in the backyard at dusk).

Topshop has released a fabulous feathered headpiece in its latest collection:

and Brisbane designer Yes Vincent (stocked at the wonderful Chasing Bow boutique in Paddington) has got some gorgeous wrist, neck and collar pieces which I gaze at wistfully. Her stuff reminds me of a pair of feathered Peter Lang earrings I used to have - chewed off by an overly amorous boyfriend with an ear fetish, much to my college-budget horror when I realised they were no longer wearable.

More feathers for your viewing pleasure (including some cute feathered headbands from Etsy):
